Thai New Year

In 2014 I was traveling in Thailand during their Songkran Festival. Songkran is the celebration of the Thai New Year, on April 13th, when the sun moves from Pisces to Aries in the solar calendar. The celebration lasts for 3 days, and the tradition is that you pour water over the shoulders of your elders, to wash away the old and start fresh.

Chiang Rai

On the first day, I was in Chiang Rai walking around with my camera. I was headed into town when I saw some locals celebrating. I motioned to them with my camera, asking permission to photograph them. Even though I don't speak any Thai and they didn't speak any English, they invited me into their celebration. Complete with whisky and buckets of water.

Bangkok

In Bangkok, tourists and locals fill the streets with parades and water guns. We bought super-soakers and were ready to party, not realizing that a bucket is much more effective.
